Happy Birthday Niccolo!!

Being the little brother of a special needs sibling has it’s perks and some downsides too.

On one hand, there’s tons of super cool equipment to climb on, swings bolted to the ceiling of the living room, a therapy center that seems to be your own personal playground and PLENTY of trips to the doctors office where you can drive mom insane by touching all the germy things with your tongue.

On the other hand, you have to exercise patience during those doctor’s visits, there are long commutes to and from therapy and sometimes your birthday party planning gets pushed to the wayside by an unexpected hospital stay followed by more unexpected illness.

Like any special needs sib, Nicco will grow up experiencing both sides of this coin. Sometimes I worry that he won’t feel as loved simply because Oliver’s care requires so much of my attention. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. This tiny Tasmanian Devil lights up my every day.

He has the wild chaotic energy of an erupting volcano, which I try endlessly to capture for my own survival. His little voice utters the cutest attempts at language that I could possibly imagine. And the mischievous little smile that comes across his face when he knows he’s being naughty pops out dimples that lighten even the darkest of moods.

My little NiNi, has made quite a name for himself in the last 2 yrs. He continues to live his life in the same fashion he came into this world, fast and furious, earning the monikers Taz, Little Tarzan, NiccoNO, WreckItRaph and so many more. But none of those describe the sweet snuggles he shares with me, the way he calls MommyMommyMommyMommy from his crib in the mornings or the enthusiasm he brings to the table when he gets to help with Oliver’s breathing treatments.

He is my biggest blessing wrapped up in a tiny package and I give thanks every day for his beautiful presence in my life.

Happy 2nd Birthday to my sweet baby boy. Two years have flown by in the blink of an eye.

Onward we go to the year of ‘terrible twos.’ Please take mercy on this tired mama!!
